Weekly Wine Review - Pinot Noir - 2009 Kanzler Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

This past September we went on a cruise to Alaska on the Norwegian Pearl.  It was definitely a cruise that made us feel young and alive, mostly because all the other passengers were at least 80 years old.  Outside of the demographic it was a great cruise and our second to Alaska. Both times we went on a Salmon fishing excursion and sent home our catch. During our latest cruise, it was Silver Salmon season and my wife and I each caught a nice size fish.

I wanted a fitting wine to go with our next to the last piece of this extraordinarily delicious fish - so I went right for the Pinot Noir. Kanzler is sometimes tough to find in a local retail store, but online wine shops do carry it.  I have a few bottles from when we were members of their wine club, but alas for space reasons I had to drop one and decided to keep Kosta Browne and Sea Smoke - not an easy decision!

Wine: 2009 Kanzler Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
Region: Sonoma Coast, California
Grape Varieties: Pinot Noir
Obtained from: Purchased from Kanzler Winery Wine Club
Price: $48.00
Wino4Life Category: Weekend Wine
Aeration before tasting: Just a swirl or two, no special aeration.

Cork Condition: Natural Cork - no defects or issues.
Appearance: Wine is clear, ruby red at the core and water white at the rim.
Aroma: I had opened a bottle of this wine a few months ago, and it was a bit to early because then the nose was nearly nonexistent. Now - very lively cherry and raspberry with cola, earth, and something herbal I could not put my finger on (and the salmon was getting cold, so enough sniffing already!).
Taste: Delicious, nicely balanced - soft tannins (mouth-drying feel) and a nice amount of acidity (mouth-watering feel).  A nice long finish - definitely a quality wine.

The Grade: I give this one an A. This wine paired very nicely with our prize catch of Silver Salmon.  If you like Pinot Noir, it may be easier to join the Kanzler wine club than it has been in past years - so strike now!
