Weekly Wine Review - Red Blend South Africa - 2011 Neethlingshof Estate Caracal

Tried any wines from South Africa? They do have a bit of history making wine, actually dating back to 1659 - when the Dutch East India Company established a supply station in the area now known as Cape Town. Today's wine is a Bordeaux style blend from one of the most famous South African regions - Stellenbosch.

Wine: 2011 Neethlingshof Estate Caracal
Region: Stellenbosch, South Africa
Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc
Obtained from: Purchased at Total Wine & More
Price: $20
Wino4Life Category: Weekend Wine
Aeration before tasting: Just a swirl or two, no special aeration.
Cork Condition: Natural cork - no defects or issues.
Appearance: Clear, purple in color with a pink rim.
Aroma: Cherries, blackberries, vanilla, spices.
Taste: Fruity, nicely balanced, with just a bit of tannins. A pleasant finish where the fruit carries on through along with the vanilla.
The Grade: I give this one an A. A solid Bordeaux Blend for $20, nice to just sip (if you like bigger red wines), and a great pair with a steak or a beef stew.
