Weekly Wine Review - California Red - 2012 Calcareous Vineyard Tres Violet

Calcareous is a winery I have on my list for our next trip to Paso Robles (October, but who's counting!).   I've never had their wine before, but have read some very good things... so when I came across this little number...let's drink!
Wine: 2012 Calcareous Vineyard Tres Violet
Region: Paso Robles, CA
Grape Varieties: Mourvedre, Grenache, Syrah (a.k.a. GSM blend)

Obtained from: Purchased at Total Wine & More
Price: $42

Wino4Life Category: Weekend Wine
Aeration before tasting: Just a swirl or two, no special aeration.

Cork Condition: Natural cork - no defects or issues.
Appearance: Nice and clear, beautiful reddish purple.
Aroma: Red raspberry, blackberry, baking spices, plus a little floral note.

Taste: Delicious, nice acidity, nicely balance, and a very good finish.

The Grade: I give this one a (solid) B.  I do really like this wine, and will definitely be visiting Calcareous in October - but I just don't find it to be a $42 wine. For closer to $25 I would happily drink it regularly, but at this price point I'm looking for more complexity and a bit more memorable wine.

  1. We fell in love with the Tres Violet. When in October are you heading to Paso? For the Harvest weekend?
