Weekly Wine Review - Spanish Red - 1994 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia

López de Heredia is one of my favorite wineries in Rioja.  They age their wines beyond the requirements of the Rioja wine region.  Their white Rioja (Rioja blanco) is one of my favorite white wines of all time. Today's gem stowed away in our luggage from our last trip to Spain, and I'm soooo glad it did!  We stopped by just to pick up a few bottles, and were lucky enough to find some Gran Reserva level wine available. A splurge wine price point, but some wines are just worth it... let's see if this one is!!!

Wine: 1994 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia
Region: Rioja, Spain
Grape Varieties: 75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha (Grenache), 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo

Obtained from: Purchased at Winery
Price: $70
Wino4Life Category: Splurge Wine

Aeration before tasting: Just a swirl or two, no special aeration.
Cork Condition: Natural cork - no defects or issues.

Appearance: Dark red, transparent, showing some age with yellowing at the rim.
Aroma: Cherry, licorice, vanilla, smoke, and spices.
Taste: Silky tannins, great acidity, a very long and very outstanding finish.

The Grade: I give this one an A+. Wow! This winery has never disappointed me.  This is one of those wines that is worth the splurge for a special occasion - a great meal or a nice spread of Spanish cheeses and Iberico ham. This wine is till packed with a good amount of great cherry fruit - does not seem to be over 20 years old. I would love to try it again in 10 more years! Find one of these and enjoy it! Cheers!
