Weekly Wine Review - Arizona Red - 2012 Caduceus Nagual de La Naga

A Super Tuscan style wine from Arizona? Why not.  This beauty is from Graham County in southeastern Arizona.  Caduceus makes some serious wines... good wines, not just "good wine for Arizona."  Maynard Keenan from the band Tool is the winemaker... so their is a good chance it rocks!
Wine: 2012 Caduceus Nagual de La Naga

Region: Graham County, Arizona
Grape Varieties: Sangiovese - 66%, Cabernet Sauvignon - 34%

Obtained from: Purchased at Winery
Price: $45
Wino4Life Category: Weekend Wine

Aeration before tasting: Just a swirl or two, no special aeration.
Cork Condition: Natural cork - no defects or issues.

Appearance: Clear, dark red, but lighter than I would have thought for a blend that is 1/3 Cabernet.
Aroma: Cherry, blackberry - a nice amount of spice making it seem more like an Italian old world style wine than something from Arizona.  Also a hint of pencil shavings from the Cabernet.
Taste: Bright from good acidity - medium bodied and ready for a good tomato based spaghetti dish.  Finish is fantastic.

The Grade: I give this one an A. Like a trip to Italy without the airfare - a really excellent wine. An excellent homage to the Super Tuscan as well as more classic old world style Italian wines. The price tag is closing on on $50, but this is a unique beast born in the desert - worth the investment. Cheers!
