Weekly Wine Review - Napa Red - 2013 Freemark Abbey Fiftieth Reserve

I worked late on a Friday night (ok only 5p, but that's late for a Friday!!!), so we decided to stroll to our local Steakhouse instead of worrying about cooking.  We hadn't been there in a while, and the first thing I noticed was their wine list had definitely shrunk.  This makes me sad, but I picked a wine that looked good.  A few minutes later... we don't have that one.  OK, perusing the list again (I am adverse to accepting the servers suggestion without another look at the list. Alright, second choice submitted.  A few minutes later ... steeeee-rike two!  But another server had brought over this wine, and it was intriguing. A special 50th Super Bowl wine by Freemark Abbey... let's do it!

Wine: 2013 Freemark Abbey Fiftieth Reserve
Region: Spring Mountain District, Napa Valley
Grape Varieties: Blend: 67% Merlot, 14.3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 5.7% Petit Verdot
Obtained from: Purchased at DC Steakhouse, Chandler, Arizona
Price: $100 (Restaurant Price), Retail at $90... WHAT???
Wino4Life Category: Splurge Wine
Aeration before tasting: Just a swirl or two, no special aeration.

Cork Condition: Natural cork - no defects or issues.
Appearance: Clear, dark purple.
Aroma: Blackberries, chocolate, spices, and cedar.
Taste: Great balance, lots of black fruit. Silky tannins that paired nicely with my Rib-eye. Great, long finish.

The Grade: I give this one an A.  Very drinkable now, with enough tannins to age for a good amount of time. A nice blend that is a great find at a restaurant as it is very ready to drink. Initially with the restaurant price of $100, I expected a $50 retail price.  If that had been the case, this may have been an A+ wine, but looks like we got a nice break on the price after they had to shoot down my first two choices.  I only hope the Super Bowl (or at least the commercials) are good enough to deserve this very nice wine.  Cheers and go Broncos (I used to live in Denver, so I'm allowed!)
